MY GRANDEST FOAL

I'll lend you for a little while
My grandest foal, He said.
For you to love while she's alive
And morn for when she's dead.
It may be one or twenty years,
Or days or months , you see.
But, will you, till I take her back,
Take care of her for me?
She'll bring her charms to gladden you,
And should her stay be brief,
You'll have treasured memories
As solace for your grief.
I cannot promise she will stay,
Since all from earth return.
But, there are lessons taught on earth
I want this foal to learn.
I've looked the wide world over
In my search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes,
With trust, I have selected you.
Now will you give her your total love?
Nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come
To take her back again?
I know you'll give her tenderness
And love will bloom each day.
And for the happiness you've known!
Forever grateful stay.
But should I come and call for her
Much sooner than you'd planned
You'll brave the bitter grief that comes
And someday you'll understand.
For though I'll call her home to Me
This promise to you I do make,
For all the love and care you gave
She'll wait for you, inside Heaven's Gate.

Baby Mercedes was born at the Gibson County Facility Early on the morning of June 5, 2007. I received the call from Tony that this little one had been born and that momma had no milk to feed her. So I contacted a friend down the street and we headed to Gibson County to pick this little one up. She was brought back to IHR South in the back seat of a Mercedes Benz, that is how she got her name. Upon arrival Wave 3 TV was here to do a story on her and the other momma's and baby's we had here at the facility from the seizure.
Everything was going great until she was about 10 days old and then she slowly quit eating and just wanted to lay around. The vet had check her on several occasions and could not find anything wrong. He on two separate occasions drew blood, but nothing really showed up. During this time she quit eating all together. On Saturday morning June 23, I made a call to the vet again and told him we were loosing her. He made another trip out and upon arrival and taking vitals agreed and he saw a need to transport this little one to a hospital. Rood and Riddle were contacted and we were on our way this time in the back of a SUV. Mercedes laid still for the 2 hour drive.
Upon arrival at the hospital and a quick check by the vet who was waiting he didn't give us much hope for her survival. He was willing to give her 24 hours to improve.  So the fight was on the save Baby Mercedes.
Her body temperature was low, her limbs were cold to touch and she just laid there in the straw. I walk out of the stall for a minute and when I returned I found the vet laying beside her in the straw. I knew then she had won his heart.
She has been there 5 days now and continues to improve each day. She is not out of the woods yet, but she is improving. Her vitals are good, her temp is up and she is now trying to stand. She has been up about 50% of the day the last two days. The vet has high hope's of this little girls recovery. We still do not know why she got ill.
She need your help in paying for the medical bills while she is at Rood and Riddle. We are a 501c3 non profit and we work on donations alone. All donation are tax deductible if your personnel situations allow that. We knew we were going to have a big bill for this little girl, but she deserved the chance for life after the rough start she had and having no momma to protect her. We could not just let her die. Her little friend Miracle is missing her terribly, even though she did not like Mercedes in the beginning.

Mercedes in her hospital room at Rood and Riddle

7/10/07

Mercedes is still in the hospital at Rood and Riddle. She is improving and in stable condition. The little one will just not eat on her own. They have tried everything. Last Friday they inserted a feeding tube and that has helped her gain weight and feel better. She will not be released until they are sure she can make it at home with a lot of help.
