Gibson County

Baby Miracle
5/28/07
Baby Miracle was born at 8 am Sunday morning with the help of Bob and I and Dr Beckman. His momma was one on the horses taken from the Gibson County farm on Saturday. Back in September of last year we removed 35 horses from the same farm. A total of 55 horses need to be removed from the farm , but funding is keeping us from doing it. Baby miracle and his momma along with another mare and stud colt were one of the lucky ones that they removed Saturday. They also took out approximately 11 other. Baby miracles momma rated about a 1 on the henneke scale.
All three horses were brought in here at the South facility safely. Unloaded and bedded down for the night. A close eye was being kept on Miracles momma. We were almost positive she was starting into labor. At 8am after a short trip inside Bob went back out to the barn to find Momma had started giving birth and was so tired and weak she stopped pushing. The vet was called immediately and instructions were given to pull the baby. Bob had seen no signs of life from the baby and we thought she was dead. As he started pulling she gasp for air and the fight was on to save her. Keeping her massaged and warm until the vet arrived. Upon arrival baby was examined first and seemed to be doing well other that a few swollen places on her face were momma was trying to get up with her hanging a couldn't. Now the attentions were focused on momma. After the vet working on her for awhile we were able to get her on her feet. Time for baby to nurse, momma had no milk. Hoping in time she would start producing milk. We supplemented some frozen colestrum we had here along with man made. That is still not enough for this young one to survive. We are going to have to give here plasma.

Baby Miracle and her Momma was checked out by their doctor again today. They are still listed in critical condition by their doctor, but are getting better. Baby Miracle's appetite has increased and she is up for longer periods walking the barn isle. Yesterday was a rough day for Momma, she went down and we could not get her up. We had planned on a outing horseback riding with some of the volunteers here at the rescue and then a cook out. As each volunteer arrived they were more concerned about helping Momma and not riding. It took 5 grown men and the vet to get her on her feet.  With out our volunteers to help when they can we could not do what we do. The vet told us that if she went down again she would probably not get back up. She has very little fat left on her body. Well today around noon she went down again.  She was not willing to give up, she kept trying to get up. We made a few phone calls and got a couple of the volunteers here again to help. While we were waiting, Momma pulled herself out of her stall to the hay bale we had in the isle, even though she had plenty of hay in her stall. It was if she was saying please don't take my food away. We were once again able to get her to her feet, this time it was a little easier.

Do ya think she thinks she is human?

Miracle is doing a little better today. She got to spend some more time with Momma. She was a happy camper. She thinks she's got to be with somebody all the time. She kicks the stall door to remind us that she is back there. This little gal has an attitude. Amazing Grace her momma is still holding her own. We let her lay for a little while today. If she lays to long the swelling in her one leg gets worse. So we are keeping her on her feet as much as possible.

Baby Miracle has had a rough start to life. First with her birth and the from complications following. She has a small fracture to her lower jaw from were momma was beating her head against the stall wall trying to stand up during birth and was to weak to get to her feet. The vet was unable to see the fractured area until the swelling went down in her face from all the trauma.  There was a loose chip causing an abscess and infection. After another week of antibiotics, Miracle finally seems to be healing. The place in her lower jaw is filling in nicely. She is spoiled rotten and still only tolerates Mercedes.

She is one pretty little girl. She is going to be a strawberry roan.

Baby Miracle is doing great. She is growing like a weed and eating like a little pig. She does miss her little Buddy Mercedes though. Her jaw is completely healed and she thinks she owns the place. She will come into the office with us were she thinks the bed is hers. We will pick her up and lay her on it and she lays there with her head on a pillow.

Miracle with her new friend Cupcake. She is not a happy camper, she wants Mercedes back.
